Choose your gaming system

The first step to becoming a gamer is choosing a gaming system. There are three primary gaming systems to choose from: Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. Each of these systems offers a unique gaming experience and game titles. However, if you are new to gaming, I recommend starting with the Nintendo Switch system. This system is user-friendly and features a wide variety of games that can be played both on the TV and handheld. I’m a huge fan of Mario Kart 8 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land! Once you’re ready to explore other systems, we are a PlayStation 5 family and would highly recommend it.

Explore different game genres

The gaming industry offers a plethora of game genres, and it is essential to find one that speaks to your interests. Role-playing games are popular among women due to the vast worlds and immersive storylines. Games like The Sims and Animal Crossing are also so fun, with an emphasis on character creation and simulation. Adventure games, such as Tomb Raider and Uncharted, offer a mix of puzzle-solving and action for an exciting experience. If you have someone to play with, I highly recommend It Takes Two. Joe and I played this whole game and it was so fun I am ready to start all over again. Honestly it’s a perfect date night idea!

Find community

The beauty of gaming is that it doesn’t have to be a solitary experience. Join gaming groups on social media platforms like Facebook and Reddit to connect with fellow gamers. I personally am not huge into an online community but thoroughly enjoy playing games with my husband at night after Nico’s in bed. Having someone to enjoy it with enhances the experience and it’s a way for us to spend time together with our phones off.

Use gaming as a stress reliever

Video games provide an escape from everyday life, allowing you to immerse yourself in a new world and experience. It can also be an effective stress-reliever. Research shows that playing video games for a short period can significantly reduce stress levels.

Don't let stereotypes hold you back

As a female gamer, it is essential to remember that stereotypes are not true representations of the gaming community. Women have been a part of the gaming world since its inception, and there are more female gamers now than ever before. The gaming world is open to everyone, regardless of gender.

The world of video games can be a fun, exciting and relaxing way to spend your free time. As a beginner, don't let the overwhelming options or stereotypes scare you away. Familiarize yourself with different gaming genres and systems, connect with other gamers, and use gaming as a stress-reliever.
