Girls Guide to Sports: What You Need to Know to Enjoy Watching the MLB Playoffs

Hey there, besties! Grab your foam fingers and baseball caps, because today we're diving into the electrifying world of Major League Baseball. I know, I know, some of you might be thinking, "Baseball? Really?" But hear me out—this game is more than just bat-and-ball; it's a cultural experience that brings people together, and yes, that includes us girls too!

I come from a baseball family and my dad is the biggest San Francisco Giants fan probably ever. I grew up watching every Giants game (all 162 of them!) with my dad and it instilled a love of sports that I hope to pass on to Nico. Growing up I continued to love all sports but always was more of an exception than the rule. I think there are a ton of women missing out on the fun, excitement and camaraderie of professional sports and I’m hoping to change that! So let’s dive in.

  • First Things First: The Basics

    • Let's start with the ground rules, shall we? In baseball, there are two teams, each with nine players. The goal is to score more runs than the opposing team. Simple enough, right? But there's a lot of strategy involved, and that's where the fun begins.

  • Innings and Outs

    • A standard baseball game has nine innings, and each inning is split into two halves—the top and the bottom. In each half, the team at-bat tries to score runs, while the other team plays defense. Three outs and the teams switch roles.

  • Runs, Hits, and Home Runs

    • Run: A player scores a run by going around all the bases and reaching home plate.

    • Hit: When a batter successfully strikes the baseball into fair territory and the batter successfully makes it to at least first base as a result.

    • Home Run: When a batter hits the ball out of the park, automatically scoring a run.

    • Grand Slam: When a batter hits the ball out of the park with all of the other bases loaded with runners, getting 4 points for his team.

  • Understanding the MLB Playoffs

    • The MLB playoffs are where the stakes are high and the drama is real. After a grueling regular season, the best teams duke it out for the title of World Series Champion. Since the Giants didn’t make the playoffs, I’m rooting for the Phillies this year since my husband is from Philadelphia! Go Phils!

  • Key Terms

    • Division Series: Best-of-five series that kicks off the playoffs.

    • Championship Series: Best-of-seven series to determine the league champion.

    • World Series: The grand finale, where the American League and National League champions face off in a best-of-seven series.

  • How to Make It Fun

    • Watch with Friends

    • Understand the Rivalries!

      • Baseball rivalries add a layer of drama that's almost soap opera-like. Knowing the history makes the games much more engaging.

    • Pick a Team

      • You don't have to be a lifelong fan to pick a team for the playoffs. Choose based on the city, players, or even the team colors—no judgment here!

  • Don't Forget the Snacks

    • Remember, baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. Games can last upwards of three hours, so you'll want to stock up on munchies. Think popcorn, chips and guac, and classic Cracker Jacks.

  • Make It a Fashion Statement

    • Who says you can't look cute while watching sports? Rock that team jersey with some skinny jeans and ankle boots, or go casual with a baseball cap and your fave loungewear.

  • And Lastly, Enjoy the Atmosphere

    • Even if you're not a die-hard fan, the MLB playoffs are a spectacle to enjoy. From the Star-Spangled Banner to the 7th-inning stretch, it's American tradition at its finest.

So there you have it, ladies! A no-fuss, no-muss guide to enjoying the MLB playoffs. Now go forth and be the life of the baseball party!

Let me know in the comments if you end up watching any of the games! ⚾💕
