POTS Flare-Up Survival Guide

If you're reading this, chances are you are one of the many people who suffer from POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). For those who don't know, POTS is a condition that affects the body's ability to regulate blood pressure and heart rate. This can cause many different symptoms, including dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and more. Personally, I've lived with POTS for over a year now and I know how difficult it can be to manage flare-ups. So today, I want to share some practical solutions and products that have helped me survive and even thrive during those difficult times.

Hydration is Key

During a flare-up, your body needs more fluids than ever, so it's important to stay hydrated at all times. I often add electrolyte packets to my water, such as BioSteel or Liquid I.V., to give it an extra boost. Another option is to drink coconut water, which contains natural electrolytes.

Compression is Your Friend

Compression socks and compression leggings can be lifesavers during flare-ups. By compressing the legs, they help improve blood flow and prevent blood pooling, which can lead to dizziness and fainting.

Keep Your Salt Intake Up

Salt is essential for maintaining blood volume and preventing symptoms like dizziness and lightheadedness. During a flare-up, I make sure to add extra salt to my meals and snacks. My go-to sources are pickle flavored salt packets (don’t knock it until you try it!) and veggie straws since we almost always have them in the house for Nico. You can also add salt directly to smoothies, oatmeal, veggies, and more.

Rest is Vital

During a flare-up, your body needs time to heal and recover, so it's important to get plenty of rest. This may mean taking a break from work, social activities, and exercise. Weighted blankets can also help if you suffer from anxiety during your flares.

Technology Can Help

There are many apps and gadgets that can make managing POTS symptoms easier. For example, the Apple Watch has a feature that can detect heart rate irregularities and alert you if something is wrong. The app POTS Care can help track your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider.

Living with POTS can be challenging, but with the right tools and techniques, it is possible to manage symptoms and thrive during flare-ups. Hopefully, some of the tips and products I've shared here will be helpful on your own journey. Remember to stay hydrated, wear compression garments, keep your salt intake up, prioritize rest, and don't be afraid to use technology to your advantage. With a little bit of planning and self-care, you can survive even the toughest of flare-ups.
